According to Foster, every trip is a quest, except when it is not.

Every Quest Requires Five Things:
  1. quester
  2. a place to go
  3. a stated reason to go there (often failed)
  4. challenges and trials en route
  5. a REAL (educational) reason to go there. This reason is usually self-knowledge.

As we read texts in this class, I want you to come to this wiki and add to this chart.

Inferno by Dante Alighieri
Dante
Through Hell, passing through in order to reach God/Heaven
Dante is traveling through a "dark forest", representing a loss of faith or suicidal thoughts. After encountering three beasts, representing sin, the phantom of Virgil appears and states that he has been sent by angels to guide Dante back to the righteous path. But first, Dante must travel through the Realm of the Damned in order to reach the land of Salvation.
Dante confronts and speaks to many of Hell's inhabitants, both deceased humans and demons. Many times he is told to turn back, and Virgil fails to protect Dante in some instances. He progresses from sympathizing with the inhabitants of Hell in it's early circles, but as his journey progresses, he becomes more righteous and calloused to their sentences. By the end, he believes every punishment appropriate for every vile being.
Dante faced the temptations of sin in the beginning of his journey, but after seeing the evils of mankind, he understands the necessity of Hell and the divine punishment that is distributed by God to the wicked.
